What's in a name?
Chuck Matthei was one of the bright minds that conceived the Community Land Trust (CLT) way of economics and brought it to life within the US legal system. It was a great loss that Chuck died at 54, but his legacy is part of the line that leads from where we are today directly back to Gandhi and other heroes. KulshanCLT would not exist had it not been for visionaries like Chuck, and now we get to stand on the shoulders of those giants. Because of Chuck's great contributions to social and economic justice, we feel that Matthei Place is the right choice for our first project.
For more about Chuck Matthei (pronounced MATH-eye and spelled like Matthew except an i at the end instead of w) you can find his obituary, some photos and writings posted at the Equity Trust website, http://equitytrust.org/cm_obit.html
Here's an excerpt from the obituary...
"Charles Lee (Chuck) Matthei, 54, nationally known as a visionary thinker and activist for social justice…… Beginning as a teenager active in the Civil Rights movement, Chuck developed an approach to poverty and inequality that linked activism, economics and property issues into a powerful political message. His work has influenced many diverse movements, including community economic development, efforts to preserve family-run farmlands, the community loan fund network that ultimately became the basis of the Community Development Financial Institutions, and permanent affordability housing policies in Vermont, Massachusetts and many other states."
